![]() ![]() If your child is a little older and is ready for it, use the alligators to compare: ![]() This was quite challenging for her, so after a few more problems I let her get back to her reading. ![]() ![]() Then I made it even tougher with the above example. With an accompanying illustration, she was able to see that those are equal. When I saw that she knew that “2,465 is greater than 2,456”, I created more challenging problems involving fractions. I started with some larger numbers to give her practice with place value. These simple on the floor activities were far too easy for my Seven, who is going into second grade. After figuring out the answer, I had him read it using the words on the alligator. I got out my color tiles from my teaching days. We used a few toys with my Five too, but it became obvious that to help him work with larger numbers we’d need small manipulatives. I would set out small piles and ask my Four to tell me which was larger without counting. He understood that when the piles had equal amounts, he needed to choose the equal sign. If your child has trouble, you could draw a simple number line and show him how the larger numbers are farther on the line. My Four had no trouble figuring out greater than/less than for amounts under 10. After doing a variety of counting activities over the last year, he can count objects up to about 20 without much difficulty. After counting each pile, he identified the larger one and chose which alligator he would need to swallow up the bigger amount. We started by getting out our toy food and putting it in small piles that I knew my Four could count. After printing on cardstock and laminating, I brought them to the playroom. You can do this activity using only two things:Ī) the free alligator printables (get them at the end of this post)ī) something to count, like a stack of toys or small math manipulatives (for older kids, you just need a dry erase or chalk board)Īmong the three kids (ages 4, 5, and 7) we learned more about:įirst, I created some simple alligator less than, greater than, and equal to printables. Yes, I realize that’s stretching it! But my goal is to put together a variety of math activities, not to match the letter exactly ). how about a less than, greater than, e qual to lesson? ![]() Never countersink if the top skin is not thick enough to fully contain the countersink. This drawing from Glasair’s assembly manual for the Sportsman shows when dimpling should be used versus when countersinking is allowable consistent with best practices. These sizes can often be hard to find, so it may take some effort to locate a source. Of course, you can also just cut off the extra length of a longer rivet, but in some cases it may be more convenient to use half-length rivets. For example, if you need a 3/23-inch flush rivet that is 7/32 inch long, you can order an AN426AD-3-3.5 rivet. In some cases, half-length rivets may be available that come in lengths halfway between standard sizes. Softer A rivets will be designated the same except the AD will be replaced with an A. A universal head AD rivet that is 1/8-inch in diameter with a 1/4-inch grip length will be designated as AN470AD-4-4 or MS2. Lengths and diameters are shown in the suffix, with the first number being the diameter in 1/32 inch and the second number being the grip length in 1/16 inch. Monel rivets will be harder to drive and buck than aluminum rivets due to their higher strength and tendency to work harden.Īluminum AD rivets come in these main configurations: universal head (similar to but not exactly the same as round-head), designated as AN470AD or MS20470, and flush or countersink rivets that are shaped to fit in a 100-degree countersunk hole, designated as AN426AD or MS20426. ![]() Thus a 1/8-inch Monel rivet that is -inch long will be shown as MS20615-4M4. Sizes are indicated by a suffix such as this: -4M4, where the first 4 is the diameter in 1/32 inch, the M is for Monel, and the last 4 is for the length in 1/16 inch. Monel universal head rivets carry the designation MS20615. Monel has a melting point of about 2400F, versus aluminum at 1040F. They are preferred for this application because they are fairly fire resistant, and they have a low tendency to corrode when in contact with stainless steel or titanium. ![]() ![]() These metals will be found almost exclusively in the firewall area of most planes. They can also be used to join titanium parts. Monel rivets have limited use, that being mainly to join stainless steel parts together. Solid rivets come in many different metals and alloys, but the ones most commonly used by Experimental builders are made of aluminum or Monel. Since we covered blind rivets in a previous article, we will focus on solid aircraft rivets in this article. The rivets we are likely to use can be roughly grouped into solid rivets and pull or blind rivets. There are lots of different types of rivets, but only a relatively few are of interest to amateur airplane builders, so we will keep our focus on those and refer you to AC43.13-1B for more information on the many types of rivets that do not apply to us. ![]() ![]() ![]() Look for coupon codes online - I got an extra 10% off after trying a few. ![]() ![]() In other words, phytoplankton respond very rapidly to changes in their environment. Scientists have found that a given population of phytoplankton can double its numbers about once per day. The larger the world's phytoplankton population, the more carbon dioxide gets pulled from the atmosphere, hence, the lower the average temperature due to lower volumes of this greenhouse gas. Phytoplankton use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and in turn provide almost half the oxygen we breathe. These small organisms can affect a system on a very large scale such as climate change. The study of ocean color helps scientists gain a better understanding of phytoplankton and their impact on the Earth system. Since these substances are usually composed of organic carbon, researchers generally refer to these substances as colored dissolved organic matter, CDOM for short. There are other substances that may be found dissolved in the water that can also absorb light. The basic principle behind the remote sensing of ocean color from space is this: the more phytoplankton in the water, the greener it is.the less phytoplankton, the bluer it is. So, the ocean over regions with high concentrations of phytoplankton will appear as certain shades, from blue-green to green, depending upon the type and density of the phytoplankton population there. Due to this green pigment - chlorophyll - phytoplankton preferentially absorb the red and blue portions of the light spectrum (for photosynthesis) and reflect green light. The most important light-absorbing substance in the oceans is chlorophyll, which phytoplankton use to produce carbon by photosynthesis. The swirls of green are a phytoplankton bloom in the Gulf of California. Right Image: Although microscopic, phytoplankton can bloom in such large numbers that they can change the color of the ocean to such a degree that we can measure that change from space. ![]() All plants (on land and in the ocean) use chlorophyll to capture energy from the sun and through the process known as photosynthesis convert water and carbon dioxide into new plant material and oxygen. Left Image: Phytoplankton are very small, single-celled plants, generally smaller than the size of a pinhead that contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. Some types of particles (in particular, the cells of phytoplankton, also referred to as algae) can also contain substances that absorb certain wavelengths of light, which alters its characteristics. In coastal areas, runoff from rivers, resuspension of sand and silt from the bottom by tides, waves and storms and a number of other substances can change the color of the near-shore waters. If there are any particles suspended in the water, they will increase the scattering of light. The red, orange, yellow, and green wavelengths of light are absorbed so that the remaining light we see is composed of the shorter wavelength blues and violets. When sunlight hits the ocean, some of the light is reflected back directly but most of it penetrates the ocean surface and interacts with the water molecules that it encounters. The red, yellow, and green wavelengths of sunlight are absorbed by water molecules in the ocean. Almost all sunlight that enters the ocean is absorbed, except very close to the coast. In water, absorption is strong in the red and weak in the blue, thus red light is absorbed quickly in the ocean leaving blue. The blue wavelengths of light are scattered, similar to the scattering of blue light in the sky but absorption is a much larger factor than scattering for the clear ocean water. ![]() The reason the ocean is blue is due to the absorption and scattering of light. Pure water is perfectly clear, of course - but if there is a lot of water, and the water is very deep so that there are no reflections off the sea floor, the water appears as a very dark navy blue. For most of the world's oceans, your answer would be correct. If someone were to ask you what is the color of the ocean, chances are that you would answer that is was blue. Near the Bahama Islands, the lighter aqua colors are shallow water where the sunlight is reflecting off of the sand and reefs near the surface. This MODIS image of blue water in the Caribbean Sea looks blue because the sunlight is scattered by the water molecules. ![]() |
